On average, a child will have all 20 of their baby teeth by the age of 3 years old. Baby teeth set the tone for adult teeth and play a vital role in how we speak, eat, and the formation of our jaw. Find out when you can expect their baby teeth to fall out, adult teeth to come in, and how to care for their developing smiles.

WHEN DO BABY TEETH FALL OUT?

Baby teeth typically begin to fall out around the ages of 6 to 7 years old. This occurs as baby teeth get pushed out by adult, or permanent teeth. The bottom two front teeth, also known as the lower central incisors, are often the first baby teeth that start to loosen and then fall out.

The remaining baby teeth will continue to fall out throughout childhood, with the last baby tooth coming out at around the age of 10 to 12 years old.

Maintaining the health of baby teeth is crucial to the development of a growing smile. If a baby tooth is extracted due to tooth decay or injury, an adult tooth may emerge and take its place. However, this can lead to overcrowding and cause permanent teeth to come in crooked or misaligned.

Adult teeth typically start to come in between the ages of 6 and 7. With the exception wisdom teeth, most of your child’s permanent teeth should have already come in by 13. By the age of 21, your child should have all 32 permanent teeth in place. These should replace all 20 baby teeth.

However, the rate at which adult teeth erupt can vary by child. Genetics, oral hygiene, and other factors can play a role in determining when your child’s baby teeth will be replaced by adult teeth.

A kids’ electric toothbrush can also go a long way in keeping their smiles healthy and strong—all with less effort on their part. Oral-B Kids’ Electric Toothbrushes give kids a more complete clean, reduce cavities, and improve their oral health. Plus, their favorite Disney and Marvel characters, customizable handles, and fun features help encourage healthy habits with every brushing session.

By the age of 6, kids are ready to brush on their own but brushing time can still be a hassle.

Follow these tips to make brushing more fun for kids ages 6 and up:

  • Family Brush Time: Brush and floss your own teeth at the same time as your child. You are setting a good example and demonstrating the correct techniques for brushing and flossing.
  • Gear Up: Fight off cavities and plaque buildup with help from their favorite Disney or Marvel characters. Take on cavities with the Star Wars Kids Electric Toothbrush or enlist the help of Oral-B’s Supertooth to remove 100% more plaque than a regular manual toothbrush.
  • Reward Them: kids should brush their teeth twice a day and floss daily, keep track with a calendar or sticker system. If they do a good job, treat them to their favorite game, movie, etc.
